How to Drive in Heavy Traffic

Summer is upon us here in Music City, USA — and that means folks from around the country are heading our way to experience everything our beautiful, fun-loving city has to offer. We love to welcome out-of-towners to our hometown, but all that extra traffic sure can make it difficult to get around. Here are a few tips to help you drive in heavy traffic and save yourself a bit of the headache.

Distance Yourself from Distractions

If you can connect your phone to your infotainment system or heads-up display, do so. Otherwise, leave your phone in your bag or on the seat screen-down so you’re not tempted to peek at those incoming texts. Pick a playlist or radio station to listen to in advance and keep the music at a somewhat low level.

Practice Defensive Driving

Defensive driving ostensibly means that you react to other drivers rather than force other drivers to react to you. This means no swerving in and out of lanes, cutting off other cars, or tailgating. Some tips for defensive driving include keep your eyes moving in search of changes to traffic or road conditions, go with the flow of traffic, always signal before turning or merging, and avoid vehicles that are driving erratically.

Plan to Avoid Heavy Traffic Times

Sometimes you will have no choice but to drive in heavy traffic, but you can and should do your best to avoid rush hour traffic. Planning ahead and heading out early doesn’t just reduce your stress, it can also potentially save you a great deal of time.

Traffic is an unfortunate part of the driving experience, but Kia’s comfortable interiors and cutting-edge infotainment technologies make it all a little bit more bearable. To experience the Kia difference for yourself, stop into Gossett Kia South.
